Rongwrong

RongWrong can be read as the title in which the 1917 double withdrawal is condensed into a single word. Duchamp reportedly proposed Wrongwrong; a printer’s error produced Rongwrong, and the misspelling was kept. In that doubled wrong, one may hear the two works removed from ordinary circulation: Fountain, refused and withdrawn from display, and Tulip Hysteria Co-ordinating, announced and then withdrawn into rumor, coded text, and historical uncertainty.

On this reading, one wrong belongs to the public scandal and the other to the hidden one. The first names the visible injury done to Fountain by the Society of Independent Artists; the second names the quieter disappearance of Tulip Hysteria from the record of Duchamp’s oeuvre. RongWrong is therefore not just Dada play with error. It is a compact echo of the double structure that had already been staged across exhibition, withdrawal, and print.
